The origins of Seville's Holy Week

Would you like to learn about the history of the Seville Fair?

In 1254, Alfonso X the Wise granted permission to hold one Fair in April and another in September, six years after his father had conquered Seville.

The Fair was created through the initiative of two councillors who petitioned the Plenary for the reinstatement of Seville’s fairs. Thus, the first Fair of modern times was born, inaugurated on 18th April 1847 at the Prado de San Sebastián. It featured 19 ‘casetas’ and was such a commercial and popular success that, by the following year, those in charge of livestock sales were already asking the municipality for a greater police presence because ‘the men and women of Seville, with their singing and dancing, were making it difficult to close deals’.

What began as a purely commercial event has, over the years, been embraced by the people of Seville until reaching its present status as one of the most unique expressions of colour and joy, where locals and visitors alike enjoy the festivities for six days every year.
